Things I'm Loving...

I wholeheartedly believe that no matter what is happening in your life, there is always something that you can be thankful for... no matter how simple it is.

Here are a few of the things I am loving at the moment...

Really loving finding black and white jelly beans.  I think they are in celebration of the All Blacks, but they are also my two favourite jelly bean flavours!!

Loving thoughtful surprises from an amazing sis-in-law (thanks Shells xoxo)...

Loving mixing up delicious desserts...

Loved realising that last Tuesday was the 1 year anniversary since Boo arrived!!  We love her to bits and seriously think she is the best dog ever (even though she is a wee bit chubby and needs steroids for her grass allergy).  My favourite post about Boo would have to be this one.  Still cracks me up!!

Loving cute coin purses...

Loving making a few more mustard crochet coasters...

There have been a lot of moustache shenanigans around blogland lately.  I'm not sure who's to blame... but it could be something to do with these super awesome mustaches Tracy gave me (yes, I'm totally blaming you Tracy).  Check out the funny video response (to our bloggy girls video) that the Aussie bloggers made here.

My Creative Space...

I thought I'd give you all a quick update on the progress of the Mario Mushroom Blanket I'm trying to make for my son's birthday.  I've finally started joining the squares together... and his birthday is next month so I do hope I get it finished in time!!

I decided to go with a blue background in the end.  It seems rather fitting, especially since that is the colour of the sky in the Mario games.  The blue is going to be around the whole mushroom eventually.

Can't wait to finish it and show you what it looks like!

Honey Ricebubble Slice

Honey Ricebubble Slice is a traditional Kiwi (New Zealander) sweet treat!  I even remember my Mum making this when I was young.

The recipe is super simple, and for fun you can zhuzh it up a bit by adding extra ingredients to the mix.  Things like coconut, chopped apricots and marshmallows are delicious!!

Ingredients
125g butter
½ cup of sugar
2 tablespoons of honey
4 cups rice bubbles (popped rice breakfast cereal that is just plain – no coatings or flavouring)
Grease a swiss roll tin and have a large bowl with the ricebubbles in it all ready
Mix up honey and sugar and butter into a pot with a solid base and melt – simmer as if making toffee for about 5 min – depending on how crunchy you like it, somewhere between soft ball and hard ball stage
Now, working really quickly (as it will start to set in the bowl), pour the honey toffee mix over the ricebubbles, mix through as well and as fast as you can and pour into greased tin and push down til its about an inch or so thick and firm together and leave to set.
Cut into squares to serve!

Crazy Blogging Buddies

Strange things happen when bloggy friends get together for morning tea and decide to make a "Missing you Leonie" video (especially when there are a packet of fake moustaches floating around too).

We do miss you heaps Leonie!

p.s. I secretly wonder if she heaves a sigh of relief after leaving us crazy ladies behind...

♥ Weekend Bliss ♥

What a totally awesome weekend!

This weekend included celebrating the 40th birthday of my husband's best buddy Les (Jacksta's hubby) where we ate amazingly delicious food and watched the All Blacks waste France (woohoo!!).

And we also discovered that it's pretty much impossible to play any ball game with Boo around because she kept stealing the ball and running off!

Good times with family and friends.

How was your weekend?

Things I'm Loving...

I wholeheartedly believe that no matter what is happening in your life, there is always something that you can be thankful for... no matter how simple it is.

Like every week, this week has had it's ups and downs, including the odd disappointment, coughs and colds, husband's lost wallet and the dog spewing on our bed.  But like I say, there is always something to be thankful for.

Here are a few of the things I am loving at the moment...

Fish'n chips by the water (wearing a princess dress makes it even more awesome)...

Scarecrows - just because...

Loving this fabulous idea (via Jacksta, via Dee) of having a secret journal with my oldest daughter, where we share whatever we want to with each other, then hide it under each other's pillows. LOVING it!!

Loving Poppa's measuring stick... loving seeing how tall each of our children are getting (but scary seeing that my eldest boy is nearly the same height as me!!!).

Cafe's that provide things for children to do rock!  Really appreciate when businesses think about the busy parent and their child.

Finally, loving this.  The couple on this are soooo cute and I do hope Symon and I will be like this when we grow older (although hopefully we will be a bit more computer savvy!).

Mustard Crochet Coasters

After nearly going insane trying to join up the trillions of tiny granny squares for this, I decided I needed some crochet therapy in the car the other day.

A while ago I spotted some really cute crochet coasters via the lovely Stacey at blogs tea & me and found the original pattern (thanks to her) here.  I love them and really enjoyed making them!

Do you remember my saga with Symon's opinions about crochet coasters?  Well, I dared to ask him what he thought of my recent creations.  As I dangled one of the coasters in front of him while he was driving the car, he said (with carefully chosen words), "I love that you love it."

Ha ha!  Now wasn't that nice of him?  A very safe answer (one that all men married to craft nerds should learn).

I do love them (and him).

Tan Squares

Sometimes you taste something delicious and just have to ask for the recipe. When I tasted this slice recently, I immediately asked what it was called.  I was told that it was just common old Tan Slice.

How come I've never heard of Tan Slice before?

As soon as I got home I Googled "Tan Slice" and found tonnes of recipes on offer.  It's a traditional caramel slice, but slightly different, and oh so good (I've already made it twice in one week, one with double the caramel topping!!)!

Base
150 g butter, softened
75 g sugar
½ teaspoon vanilla essence
250 g plain flour

Topping
50 g butter
1 tablespoon golden syrup
½ x 395 g tin condensed milk
2 tablespoons chopped nuts, dates, dried apricots or coconut

Method
Base: Cream butter and beat in sugar. Add vanilla and sift in flour.
Work to a soft paste, texture should be crumbly.
Place two thirds of the mixture into a sponge roll tin, press and chill. Chill remainder of mix.

Topping: Blend butter, golden syrup and condensed milk in a pot over low heat. Cool.
Spread caramel over base. Crumble remaining base mixture on top and sprinkle with nuts, dried fruit or coconut.
Bake at 180°C for 35 minutes.

Recipe Notes (from the original recipe)
My oven is really hot and when I made these, 35 minutes was far too long, whereas my mum finds 35 minutes is perfect in her oven. I suggest checking tan squares at 20-25 minutes and taking out when slightly golden. Cut into squares while warm but leave in tin until cold.

Reality Bites...

Sometimes, well, probably more like usually, things don't always go to plan in the household of PaisleyJade.

I don't ever want to give the impression in this space that our life is pure bliss - that we are one big happy family with smiling, obedient, neat and tidy kids.  I hope that you don't think that there is always freshly baked goods overflowing out of the kitchen, and beautiful crochet blankets being worked on each night to send to the poor and needy (although that would be rather nice, wouldn't it?).

To be honest, there is an awful lot of mundane going on around here - sometimes I feel like most of my day is spent either preparing meals, organising showers and baths, folding washing, telling the kids to stop bickering amongst themselves, overseeing homework or yelling at the dog to stop eating the cat food (and also trying to help hubby find either a) his lost wallet b) his lost keys c) his missing cellphone or d) his glasses).

Seriously, life here can be full on and rather messy... but I realise that that is real life, and I love it (well, most of the time).

I also love taking photos of the great moments, the ones where the kids are smiling and happy, the dog is clean and has eaten her very own food for once, the ones where my baking has actually turned out great and the snapshots of our family moments together.

Those are the things I love to remember and be thankful for, in amongst the jumble of real life.

But you knew that already, right?

p.s. The day after writing this post, my dearest husband lost his wallet for the whole day!  Thankfully we found it after stripping back the blankets on our bed after the dog spewed all over it...

Things I'm Loving...

I wholeheartedly believe that no matter what is happening in your life, there is always something that you can be thankful for... no matter how simple it is.

Here are a few of the things I am loving at the moment...

Finding this cute retro camera at our local Artisan markets last week...

Loving the excitement in our city of Whangarei on Wednesday, as we hosted one of the Rugby World Cup matches (between Tonga & Canada).  Talk about a sea of red and white everywhere! We also even had our very own Flash Mob Haka (Ngapuhi Haka) in the middle of town...

Loved making another crochet Apple Cozy for a special friend...

Loved visiting the local Kiwi House with our Playcentre, and actually getting a good look at one of the Kiwi's for once!

Loving this notebook...

Loved the fabulous "Besties Day Out" that my girl had with her bestie (this amazing lady's daughter). They went to Miss Joy's grandmother's house for the day... had spa's, watched a movie with popcorn and candy floss, painted and so much more.

Finally, loving getting chocolate in the mail (who wouldn't!!).  Thanks to Lucy from The Kitchen Maid for this fabulous giveaway.  Totally LOVE Whittaker's chocolate.
