Crochet Coasters

By PaisleyJade - Thursday, January 20, 2011

Okay - I've gone and done it.  I think I've turned 'un-cool' on you all.

A few weeks ago I saw these sweet crochet coasters here and decided I'd love to make some myself. They are fun to make, and look really cute... or so I thought.

Today I proudly showed Symon my creations, and a horrified look came over his face.  "They're doilies" he exclaimed with fear in his eyes.

It was at that exact moment that I realised I've crossed the line... I have turned into a total Granny (no offence to the grandparents reading this).

So, I think I'll still use them (in private), and I've popped the red ones in the shop for any older people out there who need something to catch the tea and coffee cup drips.

*Gulp*

  2. Oh, gosh! I think they're adorable! It never occurred to me that they look like doilies. I was actually thinking of making some myself...

  3. I like the red ones. I think as long as you steer clear of the white colour...they wont look like doilies.

  4. Yes. Yes, you have. I didn't think it was possible for someone to rival me in my crochet madness but there you go...next thing you know you'll be making shower scrubbies and dish scrubbies or "coasters"(aka doilies) that can also be used as shower and dish scrubbies. The. HORROR.

  8. They're awesome! How can anything involving a hook & yarn be granny-like?!? You should make them at the park, that would be totally cool ;)

  14. Hmm well I LOVE them! And I am not a granny... :-P

  15. I love the cream colored ones! I didn't think they looked like doilies, but after you said it, I guess I can see a similarness. But they look thicker and they have an actual purpose unlike doilies. Not that doilies are a bad thing.. Not that I have any...

..I knitted a coaster for our computer desk. Haha! I am so not ready to be a knitter. I don't have the patience to learn anymore than the basics right now. Once I found out that to use a pattern, I would have to constantly keep track of how many stitches until the next step, I was done. Maybe in a few more years. ..My coaster is a plain square that looks just like the hotpad I knitted, only smaller. ;)

I really do love the cream colored ones you made!! They are so pretty.

  18. Really cute, red too, ah, fabulous!! I just love that men shudder at crochet (but know words like crochet & doilies). Ha!! Love Posie

  19. try them with a variegated(sp) peaches and cream yarn, it's the perfect yarn, and the result will look kinda tie-dyed, which is SO not granny (well, it's kinda MY granny, but not most grannies.)

  20. Haha hilarious .. they kinda are like mini-doiles - but aren't they making a bit of a come back?

  33. Haha! I'm glad it's not just my husband that makes eyebrow-raising comments like that publicly!
Lately I've actually been receiving compliments on my attempts at crochet projects.
I think the coasters are cool. I'd better check that pattern out - my last attempt at coasters didn't work all that well!

Not to encourage granny-like behavior (or imply there's anything wrong with such behavior, because there isn't!), but would you consider making another set of these and putting them up in the shop? We seriously need coasters and I love yours. If they are doilies, it must be said that they're cool doilies.

    p.s. Narnie sends her love!

  39. Actually granny crochet is very cool now and also profitable. New designers are using different yarns, stitches and colours to give granny a new spin.
Google the words "babette blanket" and see what amazing images come up!

  43. I like them! So what if they are "doilish"..if they make you smile/happy...crochet on!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Well, live and learn! I always thought doilies were the bigger ones LOL. I made some multicolor ones for my sister-in-law for Christmas and she loved them. BTW you can see these in all the tea related magazines. Maybe you should make some fancy ones and use them when you invite your husband to "high tea", haha.
