A Christmas Hāngi

By PaisleyJade - Saturday, December 05, 2009

Today our Playcentre had it's annual Christmas party... and it was awesome!

Instead of the traditional BBQ we had our very own Hāngi (for those of you who don't know what a Hāngi is, it's a traditional New Zealand Māori method of cooking food using heated rocks buried in a pit oven).

It was really awesome watching the guys dig up the food from the pit and it smelt and tasted so nice.

There was also bubbles, a waterslide, water balloons and the usual party fun... and while we were in the middle of singing "A Pukeko in a Ponga Tree" (The Twelve Days of Christmas) guess who turned up?  Yep, that big fat guy in a red suit who looks nothing like the real Saint Nick!

And someone was rather taken with this big red guy who gave everyone a book (I think he's trying to encourage reading this year ;).  Check out her cheeky face in the bottom picture!

I hope your Saturday was great... and I'd love to know if there is anyone else who loves Hāngi food as much as I do.

  3. I didn't know it was called hangi, but we've done that here both in the fire (at my parent's house) and at home in the oven (not as good as the fire, but still good). I love it!! :)
